Methodology

Counts come from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the national census of fatal motor vehicle crashes kept by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. We used final data for 2020-2024 and kept the 363 fatal crashes in Orange County that FARS records at an intersection or intersection-related location and that have coordinates. Crashes within 50 meters of each other were grouped into one intersection (DBSCAN clustering, at least 2 crashes per intersection). Intersections are ranked by fatal crashes, then by deaths. Each intersection is named after the two roads FARS reports most often for its crashes.

Fatal crashes only; injury-only crashes are not in FARS. The most recent final FARS year is 2024.
